Packing Lighting Fixtures For A Move: The Difficulties And Tips

Posted on

If you are planning a move, one of the challenges you are likely to face is how to relocate your lighting fixtures. Moving lighting fixtures is challenging, but there are ways to do it safely.

The Challenges

Here are the main challenges of relocating with lighting fixtures.

Shape

Most lighting fixtures don't have regular shapes. They are oddly or irregularly shaped, which makes packing them rather difficult.

Fragility

In addition to being irregularly-shaped, lighting fixtures are also fragile. They have electrical and glass parts that can easily get damaged during a move.

Packing Tips

Despite the above challenges, there are tips you can use to get your lighting fixtures to their destination safely. Below are some of these tips.

Disassemble the Fixtures

The first step is to disassemble each fixture. Remove all the detachable or removable parts such as the stands, shades, cables, and bulbs, among others. Disassembly will provide some regularity in shape, which improves packing efficiency and protects the items during the move.

Donate the Bulbs

The bulb is the most delicate part of a lighting fixture because it is made from glass. Don't forget that even a hairline crack on a bulb renders it useless. Many people prefer to donate bulbs to neighbors or friends instead of risking them during a move.

Wrap Parts Individually

Wrap every part of each lighting fixture individually. This includes the lamps, assuming you haven't donated them and intend to relocate with them. Individual wrapping ensures the different parts won't clang against each other during the move.

Use Adequate Padding

After individually wrapping the different parts of your lighting fixtures, you can place several of them in one box as long as the box is large enough. Just ensure that the box is properly padded to give extra protection to the lights. Fill all the spaces between the individual items with materials such as crushed paper, towels, or bubble wrap, among other suitable packing materials. This will prevent the items from moving and getting damaged during the move.

Label Boxes

You should always label moving boxes, especially when carrying fragile items such as packing boxes. Label them as "FRAGILE" so that anyone handling the boxes will be careful to avoid damage.

As you can see, you can relocate with your lighting fixtures despite the challenges. Of course, you can always hire a professional moving company to handle your move from the start to the end.
