Walter Winford (Winfred) West 1908-1995

 

Walter was born 8 Sep 1908 in Hoytsville, Summit, Utah; son of Walter James West & Fanny Elsie Billows.

 

Walter James West, his wife Fanny Elsie Billow, daughter Doris Elsie Ivie emigrated from England in 1907 aboard the SS Republic.

 

His Father passed away in 1911; his Grandparents still resided in Farnham, Surrey, England.

 

His Mother worked and jobs she could find to provide for him & his Sister Doris

 

When he was old enough he would turn the old washing machine for his mother, before electric washing machines were invented, he also helped her with janitor work, sweeping floors, bring in the wood & coal & hauling out the ashes.

 

At one time she worked as housekeeper & cook for the Eccles family in Ogden.

 

One day Walt road his bicycle down the old dirt road from Hoytsville to Ogden to where his Mother worked, he got board  & room near where she worked, & used to mow lawns & do yard work for his board and room.

 

Walt spent a lot of time with Richard E (Dick) Redden herding sheep in Chalk Creek.

When older he worked for his Uncle Charles H West hauling monuments to various places. Also worked for A J Farrel who with his wife Mary ran the store in Hoytsville.

 

He also tromped hay at the West Place Ranch (Rees Brothers Ranch) in Round Valley, Morgan, Utah, said there was a rattlesnake under every stack.

 

Walt married Thelma Brooks on 15 Mar 1933, they  worked together hauling wood, cutting & hauling ice from Echo reservoir to Wanship & packed it in sawdust for Parley Brown who ran a dairy farm. Daughter Betty Jean was born in 1934 & son Dwayne Winfred in 1942.

 

Walt would often take the whole family fishing, but if fishing was slow he would be rock hunting.

 

He was a lifetime member of the NRA & won many meets & trophies for .22 small bore competitions.

 

Ran a service station in Ogden for years before selling & moving to Morgan in 1974

 

In 1983 Walt & Thelma celebrated their 50 wedding with family & friends at home in Morgan.

 

Walter Winford West passed away on 13 Sep 1995 at his home in Morgan, & is buried in
